A single golden five-pointed star sits in the centre of a plain red field. Red stands for revolution and the bloodshed of the struggle, while the star and its five points represent the five main classes of Vietnamese society — intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs and soldiers — united under one nation. The flag was first used during an uprising against French rule in 1940, and the current version with the straightened star points was adopted on 30 November 1955.
Colour the red field first with broad even strokes across the whole flag, then add the golden star in the centre. The star has five straight points that reach towards the edges, so measure the centre carefully and trace each arm with a fine tip.
