One large golden star and four smaller ones are grouped in the upper corner, with each small star pointing its top ray towards the larger one. The designer’s original idea was that the large star stood for the Chinese Communist Party and the four smaller ones for the social classes — workers, peasants, petite bourgeoisie and national bourgeoisie — united under it; the later national flag laws describe the stars as symbols of the Republic generally. The flag was adopted on 27 September 1949 and first raised in Tiananmen Square on 1 October 1949.

Colour the red field first with broad even strokes across the whole flag, then add the five yellow stars in the top left corner. The large star sits at the top and the four smaller ones are arranged in a neat arc beside it, so trace them all with a fine tip.
