Two competing accounts trace the white, blue and red tricolour — one to Peter the Great who reordered the Dutch colours in 1693 after a visit to Arkhangelsk, and another to a Dutch shipbuilder who asked for a flag for the first Russian warship during the reign of his father Alexis I in 1668. White stands for nobility and frankness, blue for faithfulness and honesty, and red for courage and generosity — an interpretation handed down from the reign of Alexander III. After nearly seventy years of Soviet rule the tricolour was restored as the national flag of the Russian Federation on 22 August 1991.
Leave the top white band empty first, then fill the middle blue band and the bottom red band with long horizontal strokes that stay inside the edges. The flag has no emblem, so the three bands are all you need to complete.
