A red disc sits in the centre of a white field, the simplest form of the sun that Japan has used as a symbol since at least the seventh century. The flag is called the Hinomaru, meaning the disc of the sun, and the country itself means the land of the rising sun. It was formally adopted as the national flag by law on 13 August 1999.
Colour the red disc in the centre first, then leave the white field empty around it. The disc should fill about three-fifths of the height, so take your time drawing a neat circle and fill it with even strokes.
