A navy blue wheel with twenty-four spokes sits in the centre of the white band, the Ashoka Chakra taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka that has been a symbol of India since the third century BCE. The wheel is the wheel of law, or dharma, and the philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan described it as representing the dynamism of peaceful change. The flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947, three weeks before independence.
Colour the saffron band at the top first with long horizontal strokes, then leave the white centre empty around the wheel, and fill the green band at the bottom. The Ashoka Chakra is the finest detail, so complete it last with a fine tip — the spokes radiate outward from the centre.
