A white triangle at the hoist carries a golden sun with eight rays and three golden stars at its corners. The flag is one of very few in the world that can be flown upside down — with the red band on top — to signal that the country is at war. The sun’s eight rays stand for the eight provinces that first rose against Spanish rule in 1896, and the three stars represent the island groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Start with the blue band at the top and the red band at the bottom, then leave the white triangle empty. The golden sun and the three stars sit inside the triangle, so add them last with a fine tip, making sure the eight rays of the sun are evenly spaced.
