The thirteen red and white stripes bring back the thirteen British colonies that declared independence and became the first United States. The design has grown with the country — a new star appeared every time a state joined, and the flag reached fifty stars on 4 July 1960.
Start with the thirteen stripes — seven red and six white — using long even strokes that stay inside the edges. The blue canton at the top corner holds all fifty stars, so save that part for the end and work through the small five-pointed shapes one by one with a fine tip.
