The coat of arms in the middle shows an eagle standing on a cactus while holding a rattlesnake in its talon and beak — the Aztec sign that pointed to where Tenochtitlan, today’s Mexico City, would be built. Green, white and red are the colours Mexican armies carried during the wars that won independence from Spain, and the meaning of each stripe has shifted through the decades. Around the emblem run oak and laurel branches tied with a ribbon, and the whole coat of arms sits on a pedestal by the water.
Apply the three vertical stripes with long strokes first, keeping the white middle stripe clean. The eagle, cactus and snake in the centre are small and detailed, so leave the emblem for last and finish it with a fine tip.
