Gabon's flag avoids the green, yellow and red of the Pan-Africanist movement, and unlike most other former French colonies it arranges its green, yellow and blue bands horizontally. The green stands for the country's forests and natural resources, the yellow for the sun and the Equator, and the blue for the sea along the Atlantic coast. The design was adopted on 9 August 1960, just over a week before Gabon gained its independence.
Colour the green band at the top first, then the yellow band in the middle and the blue band at the bottom, using long horizontal strokes. Keep the edges between the three bands straight and even.
