A single red maple leaf fills the middle of the flag, with two red bars on either side of a white centre that is twice as wide as each red bar. The maple leaf has been a symbol of Canada since the 1800s, and the red and white became the official colours of the country in 1921. The flag was raised for the first time on 15 February 1965.
Colour the two red side bars first with long even strokes. The eleven-point maple leaf sits in the white centre, so trace its shape with a fine tip and keep inside each of its points.
