A gold diagonal cross cuts the flag into four triangles, two green at the top and bottom and two black on the sides. The green stands for the lush land of the island and for hope, the black for the strength of the people, and the gold for the bright sunshine. The flag was adopted on 6 August 1962, the very day Jamaica became independent.
The diagonal cross cuts the rectangle into four wedges, so watch the corners where the gold meets the green and black. Colour the two green triangles first, then the two black ones, and finish with the gold cross so its edges stay crisp.
