The three blue stripes stand for the three departments into which Cuba was divided in the 1800s; the white stripes stand for the purity of the Cuban cause, and the red triangle for equality and the sacrifice during the independence struggle. The five-pointed star in the middle is the lone star, a sign of the liberty that López and Tolón hoped for Cuba. The design was created in 1849 and adopted when the country became independent in 1902; it was first flown in battle at Cárdenas in 1850.
The red triangle on the left edge holds the white star, so that part is the trickiest to colour. First fill the blue and white stripes, then the triangle, and finish with the star left white so it stands out cleanly from the red.
