Two red bands lie above and below a yellow centre band that is twice as wide as each red band, a design that has served as the Spanish flag since it was created as a naval ensign in 1785. The coat of arms sits on the yellow band and brings together the shields of Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarre, the old kingdoms that united to form Spain. The current coat of arms was established in 1981.
Start with the top and bottom red bands using long horizontal strokes, then fill the wide yellow centre. The coat of arms sits on the yellow band just left of centre and has many small details, so save that patch for last and use a fine tip.
