Three horizontal bands of black, red and gold became the official flag of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, picking up the colours of the student and volunteer movements that had fought for a free and united Germany in the nineteenth century. The colours first flew over the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848 and were the flag of the Weimar Republic from 1919 until 1933. They were readopted after the Second World War as the symbol of a democratic Germany.
Fill the three horizontal bands from top to bottom — black, then red, then gold — using long even strokes the full width of the flag. All three bands are the same height, so keep the edges between them straight.
