The flag is divided into two vertical fields, green at the hoist and red at the fly, with a golden armillary sphere and the Portuguese shield centred over the boundary. The green and red were the colours of the republican revolution that overthrew the monarchy in 1910, and the armillary sphere recalls the great age of Portuguese navigation and discovery. The shield carries five smaller blue shields, each with five white bezants, and a red border with seven golden castles.
Colour the green field at the hoist first, then the red field at the fly, using vertical strokes. The armillary sphere and shield sit in the middle and are the most detailed part — save them for last and use a fine tip.
