Three vertical bands of blue at the hoist, white in the centre and red at the fly make up the French tricolour. The colours first appeared during the French Revolution, when the white of the monarchy was placed between the blue and red of the city of Paris as a sign that the king was now under the people. The flag was restored in 1830 after the July Revolution and has flown over France ever since.
Work from left to right with vertical strokes — blue at the hoist first, then leave the white centre empty, and finish with the red band at the fly. All three bands are the same width, so keep the edges neat.
