A green band shaped like the letter Y runs from the hoist to the middle of the fly, pulling together the six colours that make up this flag. The Y-shape was chosen as a sign of the convergence of many different people into one nation, taking the road ahead in unity. The flag was designed in March 1994 and first flown on 27 April 1994, the day of South Africa’s first democratic election.
Start with the red band at the top and the blue band at the bottom using long horizontal strokes, then fill the black triangle at the hoist. The green Y-shape and the gold and white edges between the colours are the trickiest parts, so trace those carefully with a fine tip.
