Three vertical bands of green, white and green fly as a simple design chosen from nearly three thousand entries in a national competition held before independence. The green represents the agriculture of the land, and the white stands for peace and unity. The flag was first raised on 1 October 1960, the day Nigeria became independent.

Colour the green band at the hoist first with vertical strokes, then leave the white centre empty and fill the green band at the fly. All three bands are the same width, so keep the edges neat.
