A green five-pointed star, shown as an interlaced pentagram, sits in the centre of a plain red field. The green pentagram stands for the five pillars of Islam, and the red for the blood of those who came before, the colour that has been tied to the Alawi dynasty since the seventeenth century. The flag was introduced on 17 November 1915 by Sultan Yusef.
Colour the red field first with broad even strokes across the whole flag, then add the green pentagram in the centre. The star is made of five interlaced lines, so trace each arm carefully with a fine tip.
