A shield near the upper hoist shows Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak, in white with two wavy blue lines below it for the Adriatic Sea and the country's rivers, and three golden six‑pointed stars above it taken from the arms of the Counts of Celje. The white, blue and red tricolour behind it comes not from the pan‑Slavic colours but from the medieval coat of arms of the Duchy of Carniola; it was first raised in Ljubljana by the poet Lovro Toman on 7 April 1848. The current flag with the coat of arms by Marko Pogačnik was adopted on 27 June 1991, shortly after independence from Yugoslavia.
Colour the three horizontal bands first — leave the top white one empty, fill the blue middle and the red bottom with long strokes. The shield at the upper hoist is small and full of detail, so finish it with a fine tip and careful edges.
