One of the oldest national flag designs in the world, the red-white-red triband traces to the Babenberg dynasty and was first recorded on a seal of Duke Frederick II in 1230. According to legend it was born at the Siege of Acre in 1191, when Duke Leopold V emerged from battle to find his white surcoat drenched in blood except for the strip covered by his belt. The flag was formally adopted by the re-established Republic of Austria on 1 May 1945.
Colour the top and bottom red bands with long horizontal strokes first, then leave the white middle band empty. All three bands are equal in height, so keep the red edges straight and even.
