The red‑and‑white chequy shield at the centre of the flag is the Croatian checkerboard. The red, white and blue bands behind it are the pan‑Slavic colours that have flown as the Croatian tricolour since 1848. The current flag was officially adopted on 21 December 1990, shortly before the country declared independence from Yugoslavia.
Colour the three horizontal bands first — red at the top, then leave the white middle empty, then fill the blue bottom band. The chequy shield sits in the centre and is rich in detail, so save it for last with a fine tip.
