Nine horizontal stripes of blue and white run across the flag, one for each syllable of the motto Eleftheria i Thanatos — Freedom or Death — from the war of independence. A white cross sits in a blue square at the top corner, the symbol of the Greek Orthodox faith that was carried through the centuries of Ottoman rule. The flag was adopted in its current form in 1978.
Count the nine stripes before you start — five blue and four white — and colour the blue ones first with long horizontal strokes. The canton with the white cross sits at the top left, so save that for last and use a fine tip for the cross.
