A dark blue cross sits inside a white border on a red field, with the vertical arm of the cross shifted towards the hoist. The design was created by Fredrik Meltzer in 1821 and was influenced by the flags of Denmark and France, combining red, white and blue to represent liberty.
Colour the red field first with broad strokes, then add the white outer edges of the cross and finish with the narrower blue cross inside. The cross sits slightly left of centre, so mark that spot before you begin.
