Four red stars with white edges make up the Southern Cross on the far half of the flag, and the royal blue behind them recalls the sea and sky around the islands. The design was adopted for use on the colony’s ships in 1869 and given statutory recognition on 24 March 1902. In 2016 New Zealanders voted in a referendum and chose to keep the flag by 56.7 per cent to 43.3 per cent.
Fill the royal blue field first with long strokes, then colour the Union Jack in the top-left corner. Colour the four Southern Cross stars red, using a fine tip to keep their points sharp.
