The flag was adopted on 20 August 1960 after Senegal left the Mali Federation, whose flag had carried a stylised human figure called a kanaga. That figure was replaced by a single green five-pointed star, which carries several meanings in Senegalese tradition, including as a symbol of fortune and the universe in Serer spirituality. The green, yellow and red are the Pan-African colours, arranged in three vertical bands with the star centred on the middle stripe.
Work from left to right with vertical strokes — green at the hoist, then yellow, then red — keeping the bands the same width. The green star sits in the centre of the yellow band, so finish that part with a fine tip.
