A golden lion holding a kastane sword in its right fore-paw fills the centre of a maroon field. Four golden bo leaves, one in each corner, stand for the four Buddhist virtues of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. Two stripes at the hoist — orange for the Tamil people and green for the Moor people — complete the flag, and the design took its present form on 22 May 1972 when the bo leaves replaced the four spearheads.
Colour the maroon field first with broad strokes, then the golden lion and sword in the centre, and the four bo leaves in the corners. Finish with the orange and green stripes at the hoist, keeping the two bands even.
