A vertical red band runs along the hoist beside three horizontal bands of green, white and black. The flag was designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah when he was nineteen years old, after winning a nationwide competition, and was adopted on 2 December 1971 when the seven emirates united. The colours are the pan-Arab colours — red, green, white and black.
Colour the red vertical band at the hoist first, then work through the three horizontal bands from top to bottom — green, then leave the white empty, then black. Keep the boundary between the red band and the horizontal bands clean.
