The eight‑pointed white star at the centre of the red band sets Azerbaijan's flag apart, flanked by a white crescent against a blue, red and green horizontal tricolour. The bright blue stands for Azerbaijan's Turkic heritage, the red for the creation of a modern state, and the green for Islam; the eight points of the star are often thought to stand for the eight letters of "Azerbaijan" when written in the Arabic script. The flag was first adopted by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on 9 November 1918 and was restored on 5 February 1991.
Colour the blue top band first with long strokes, then the red middle band — leaving the crescent and star white — then the green bottom band. The eight‑pointed star is small and detailed, so trace its shape with a fine tip.
