Two horizontal bands of blue and yellow represent fire and water, a pairing that comes from pre‑Christian Slavic ceremonies where these colours prevailed. The blue‑yellow arrangement was first raised in Lviv in 1848 during the Spring of Nations, though both orders had been flown by the independence movements of 1917, and the flag was officially restored by parliament on 28 January 1992 after nearly seventy years of Soviet rule.

Start with the blue band at the top using long horizontal strokes, then fill the yellow bottom band, making sure the boundary between them stays straight. The design has only two bands and no emblem, so it will be finished quickly.
