A white crescent and a five-pointed star sit slightly left of the centre on a red field, a design the Republic inherited from the Ottoman Empire whose flag had carried the same emblem since 1844. The flag is called in Turkish Ay Yıldız, the moon star, and its proportions were standardised by the Turkish Flag Law of 29 May 1936. Red has been the colour of the Turkish banner for centuries.
Colour the red field first with broad even strokes, then add the white crescent and star slightly left of the centre. The crescent and star are the only details, so place them carefully with a fine tip.
