The yellow and blue come from the national coat of arms, which shows three gold crowns on a blue field, colours that have been Swedish since at least the thirteenth century. A yellow cross stretches to all four edges on a blue field, with the vertical arm shifted closer to the hoist. The law defining the current design was passed on 22 June 1906.
Colour the blue field first with broad strokes, then add the yellow cross that runs from edge to edge. The vertical arm sits left of centre, so mark that position before you start the cross.
