The blue stands for the thousands of lakes and the sky, while the white recalls the snow that covers the land in winter. A sea-blue cross reaches from edge to edge across the white field. The flag was adopted on 28 May 1918, after Finland declared its independence from the Russian Empire.
Leave the white field empty and colour only the blue cross, starting at the centre and working out along each arm. Keep the arms straight and even so the cross stays balanced.
