Three equal vertical bands of black at the hoist, yellow in the centre and red at the fly were adopted after Belgium declared independence from the Netherlands in 1830. The colours came from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, a black shield with a golden lion with red claws, and they were arranged vertically to distinguish the flag from the horizontal Dutch tricolour. The flag was formally adopted on 23 January 1831.
Work from left to right with vertical strokes — black at the hoist, then yellow, then red — keeping all three bands the same width. The dark black and the bright yellow and red need clean edges so the colours stay separate.
