A narrow white band runs through the middle of a field of deep carmine red, a design recorded as early as 1279 in the Livonian Rhymed Chronicle and thought to be among the oldest flags in the world still in use. A popular legend says a wounded Latgalian chief was wrapped in a white sheet, and the blood that soaked the edges left only the centre unstained — in the next battle his men carried the sheet as their banner and won. The red has been described as standing for the readiness of the Latvian people to give the blood from their hearts for freedom and their willingness to defend their sovereignty.
The two wide red bands with a narrow white stripe between them run horizontally. Colour the top and bottom red bands first with long strokes, then leave the white centre band empty, keeping the edges between red and white as straight as you can.
