A single white star sits in a blue square at the top corner, known as the lone star that gives the flag its nickname. The star represents Venus, the morning star that was sacred to the Mapuche people long before the country was born, and the blue stands for the sky and the Pacific Ocean, white for the snow of the Andes, and red for the blood spilled to win independence. The flag was adopted on 18 October 1817.
Start with the red lower half using long horizontal strokes, then fill the white upper half beside the blue canton and leave the star empty. The blue square holds the star, so save the canton for last and use a fine point for the five sharp tips of the star.
