Three equal bands of red, yellow and green run across the flag with no emblem, so the colour order is the whole design. Red stands for the blood shed by the heroes who won and kept the republic, yellow for the wealth and resources of the country, and green for the richness of the natural world and the hope that guides the people. The flag was adopted on 31 October 1851.
The three bands are exactly the same height, so measure them before you begin. Start with the red at the top, then the yellow in the middle, and finish with the green at the bottom, using long even strokes all the same way.
